Barbados has received a generous donation of quality shoes to help people with diabetes avoid foot problems that can lead to infection and amputation.
The shoes were donated by OrthoFeet, in collaboration with Samaritan’s Feet International, and local charities Save our Soles Charitable Trust and The Rotary Club of Barbados South, which are also aiding with the foot screening and shoe fitting programme.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness is encouraging people with diabetes to have their feet checked. Interested persons should ask their healthcare provider about the project and their risk for developing a wound that can lead to infection and amputation. Those at risk can qualify for the shoes, which are expertly fitted, and are free of charge.
The process includes filling out a request form, receiving a diabetic foot screen and being fitted by trained professionals, who are supervised by the Ministry of Health and Wellness. Individuals may contact any of the following fitting centres for further information.
- Branford Taitt Polyclinic at 536-3700
- Eunice Gibson Polyclinic at 536-4000
- Diabetes and Hypertension Association at 228-3422
- Living Water Community Centre at 271-0555 or WhatsApp 268-1906
- Eastern Caribbean Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists at 417-6760
They may also ask their general practitioner, nurse or podiatrist about how they can take advantage of this special offer.
