Ministry Continues To Monitor Respiratory Illnesses
The Ministry of Health and Wellness is continuing to monitor respiratory illnesses in Barbados and is keeping the public informed of current trends.
An increase in respiratory illness was observed following the Crop Over period. This may have been associated, in part, with increased interaction during the celebrations.
According to the latest respiratory illness surveillance report, Influenza B continues to be detected, along with a small number of COVID-19 cases. Based on current surveillance data, health officials expect the number of respiratory illness cases to continue to decrease.
While cases are currently declining, the Ministry continues to urge members of the public to be mindful of those who may be more vulnerable to respiratory illnesses, including older persons, pregnant women, and people living with chronic conditions.
Members of the public are encouraged to take the following precautions:
- Practise good respiratory hygiene.
- Wash hands regularly with soap and water. Where soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
- Cover the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. Alternatively, cough or sneeze into the inner elbow. Used tissues should be discarded in a bin or sealed plastic bag.
- Stay at home and limit close contact with others when experiencing respiratory symptoms.
- Wear a mask if you feel it is necessary to protect yourself, particularly in crowded settings or when experiencing respiratory symptoms and interacting with vulnerable persons.
- Continue to wear a mask when visiting healthcare institutions.
The Ministry reminds the public that although respiratory illness cases are currently decreasing, continued precautions remain important. These simple measures can help reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses and protect persons who are most vulnerable to severe disease.
