The Ministry of Health and Wellness has refuted an erroneous social media message that appears to have originated out of Trinidad and Tobago on the likelihood of the significant human-to-human spread of Hantavirus.
Health authorities have reiterated that, as previously indicated, the risk to the Barbadian public is low.
Additionally, based on information from experts at the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), the Ministry reminded members of the public that the virus does not have pandemic potential.
While there is no threat to Barbados at this time, persons are reminded that rodent-borne illnesses, such as leptospirosis, are still prevalent and therefore they are advised to secure refuse, eliminate breeding sites for rodents and apply rodent bait as necessary.
Individuals may access free rodent bait from any Environmental Health Office at the nearest polyclinic. The public is urged to get information concerning the Hantavirus outbreak onboard the Dutch Vessel, MV Hondius, from credible sources, including the WHO, CARPHA, the Barbados Government Information Service and trusted media institutions.
