Epidemiology Unit

The role of the Epidemiology Unit is to strengthen surveillance of disease syndromes and diseases, investigate disease outbreaks with an emphasis on evidence-based decision-making, share information, and conduct research. The functions of an Epidemiology Unit encompass the following: 

  1. Outbreak Investigation - tracking and identification of outbreaks and deciding when to revert to routine surveillance and public health activities.
  2. Surveillance - the systematic and ongoing assessment of health in a community, including the timely collection, analysis, interpretation, dissemination and subsequent use of the data i.e. for control and prevention measures.
  3. Research- including the writing of research proposals to gain funding and the design of research projects.
